The 1936 doubled die obverse exists in three distinct recognized die varieties, with doubling visible to the naked eye in the date and lettering on well-preserved examples. Type 1 is by far the scarcest of the three, while Types 2 and 3 are somewhat more available but still genuinely scarce; across all three types combined, third-party grading services have certified only around 150 examples in every grade, making this one of the more elusive Wheat cent doubled dies. Because multiple distinct die types exist for the same year, correct attribution to the specific type matters for value, and buyers should insist on certification identifying which of the three 1936 doubled dies a given coin represents rather than relying on a general "doubled die" claim. The 1958 doubled die obverse is one of the rarest and most valuable varieties in the entire Lincoln cent series, with only three genuine examples known to exist. Doubling is bold and visible to the naked eye in the date, LIBERTY, and IN GOD WE TRUST. Given that just three coins are confirmed genuine, any claimed example must be authenticated by a major grading service without exception — PCGS and NGC census data account for the entire known population, so a coin without an ironclad, verifiable pedigree tracing to one of the three known specimens should be treated with extreme skepticism. Doubled Die Obverse (DDO)

The 1916 Doubled Die Obverse Buffalo nickel is the key variety of the series, showing strong, bold doubling on LIBERTY and the date that is clearly visible without magnification, making it one of the most visually dramatic doubled dies in American coinage. Genuine doubling shows widely separated, crisp images on LIBERTY and '1916' with no doubling on the reverse (which was struck by a normal die); die deterioration doubling — which shows shelving on just one side of letters — is worthless and commonly misrepresented as the DDO. Most survivors are in circulated grades due to the coin's heavy use during World War I and the 1920s; Mint State examples are exceedingly rare and valuable. Authentication by PCGS or NGC is strongly advised — the substantial premium for a genuine 1916 DDO makes misattribution and fraud commercially worthwhile.
