Intriguing History
By 1936, Franklin Roosevelt's New Deal was remaking the federal government's role in American life -- a bank holiday and the abandonment of the domestic gold standard came in 1933, Social Security followed in 1935, and the country slowly, unevenly climbed out of the Depression's depths. This 90%-silver Washington quarter, first struck to mark George Washington's 200th birthday, was in circulation during exactly this period. This one came from the Denver Mint, which opened in 1906 to strike coin from Rocky Mountain gold and silver.
