Intriguing History
The Trade dollar was created by the Coinage Act of 1873 to compete with the Mexican dollar in trade with China. William Barber's design carries 420 grains of 90% silver, stated right on the reverse. Philadelphia began striking them in July 1873. Congress revoked the Trade dollar's legal tender status in 1876.
