1942 Mercury Dime (1916-1945)

1/1/42

Intriguing History

A Philadelphia working die for the 1942 dime was first hubbed with the old 1941 date, then re-hubbed with 1942, leaving a clearly doubled "1" and "2" visible beneath the final digit. The result is one of the most famous overdate varieties in twentieth-century U.S. coinage, discovered and popularized so quickly that dealers were advertising it within the same year.
