USA Coin Book
Half Dollar
1838-O Capped Bust Half Dollar (1807-1839)
Half Dollar (Proof)
Key Features
Designed by John Reich, this was the workhorse silver coin of early America. A favorite for variety specialists due to extensive Overton die marriage research.
Intriguing History
This coin's data sits right at the seam between two major half dollar designs: the old Capped Bust type was on its way out and Christian Gobrecht's new Seated Liberty design, which fully took over at Philadelphia in 1839, was just being phased in.
