At the depth of the Great Depression, coin demand collapsed so completely that San Francisco struck only a small fraction of its usual cent output in 1931, and dealers reportedly hoarded rolls of the new coin as soon as its low mintage became known, making the 1931-S one of the most recognized key dates in the entire wheat cent series.
