Intriguing History
James Longacre, who designed the Indian Head cent, tried a new face for the nickel. His Liberty wears a four-feather headdress with a ribbon reading UNION AND LIBERTY, and he signed it LONGACRE F. at the neck. The back shows a big Roman numeral V over a shield, with IN GOD WE TRUST above. Struck in aluminum, then a costly metal, it is Judd-561. One sold for $4,700 in 2016.
