Introduced during the darkest years of the Civil War as coin hoarding stripped even small change from circulation, the two-cent piece was also the first U.S. coin to carry "In God We Trust," and the Mint enlarged that motto's lettering partway through 1864 production, creating the more common "Large Motto" version.
