Augustus Saint-Gaudens's original vision for the double eagle called for such dramatic sculptural relief that each coin required multiple strikes from the press just to bring up the full design, making the 1907 Ultra High Relief version gorgeous but wildly impractical for mass production and, today, one of the most coveted coins in American numismatics.
