Intriguing History
The 1873 Open 3 three-dollar piece was struck only as proofs and is traditionally called the original 1873 issue, with Closed 3 coins called later restrikes. Gold specialist David Akers disputed this, arguing the Closed 3 coins may have come first. Collectors still debate the order.
