Intriguing History
In 1992, a small number of Philadelphia cents were accidentally struck with a reverse die style that wasn't supposed to appear on business strikes until the following year, in which the letters A and M in AMERICA sit noticeably closer together than the standard design. Collectors quickly nicknamed the variety the "Close AM" cent, and genuine examples remain a prized, closely authenticated rarity.
