Intriguing History
San Francisco struck 700 Seated Liberty dollars in February 1873, just before the Coinage Act of 1873 ended the denomination. None are known today, and the U.S. Mint says it does not hold one. Researchers disagree on their fate: some think they were melted at the Mint, others that they were paid out to depositors and lost in circulation or export.
