A San Francisco die engraver mistakenly repunched a working die for the 1918 quarter with the previous year's numeral, leaving a plainly visible "7" peeking out beneath the "8" in the date. The result, struck as American troops fought in the final year of World War I, is one of the most famous overdate varieties in twentieth-century U.S. coinage.
